10 Recovery Tips After Tummy Tuck Surgery

If you are considering tummy tuck surgery or preparing for your upcoming procedure, planning ahead can make all the difference in your recovery experience. By taking proactive steps and following expert recommendations, you can look forward to a safe, efficient healing process with less discomfort, downtime, and stress.
Below, our board-certified plastic surgeon in Corpus Christi – Cassidy Hinojosa, MD – shares 10 tips to promote a smoother recovery following your abdominoplasty.
1. Ask For Help
For at least the first few days after the procedure, ask trusted family members or friends to assist with household tasks, childcare, pet care, meal prep, and prescription pick-up. Taking at least one full week off from work and responsibilities is recommended so you can focus on healing without unnecessary strain; that said, your recovery may take longer if your tummy tuck is combined with other procedures, such as liposuction.
2. Create a Healing Space
Prepare a cozy, recovery-friendly space in your home before your surgery date. Choose a quiet, easily accessible spot and outfit it with essentials like:
- Extra pillows for support
- Blankets for warmth
- Books, tablets, and other entertainment
- Chargers and access to outlets
- A nearby table for drinks, snacks, and medications
Planning your environment in advance can reduce stress when you return home and allow you to focus solely on your recovery.
3. Sleep Safely and Strategically
After a tummy tuck, be sure to keep pressure off the abdominal area—especially in the first few weeks. Sleeping with a slight bend at the hips can minimize tension on your incisions and ease discomfort. Use pillows under your knees and upper body to create a relaxed incline (about 20–30 degrees). A recliner can also be helpful during the initial recovery period.
4. Be Mindful of Your Diet
Nutrition plays a major role in the healing process. Dr. Hinojosa recommends:
- Lean proteins (such as fish) to support tissue repair
- Fresh fruits and vegetables for vitamins and antioxidants
- Hydration through plenty of water
- Limited sodium to control swelling
Avoid processed foods, excessive salt, and sugary drinks, as all of these can contribute to inflammation and slow recovery.
5. Gently Move Your Body
While rest is crucial, early and gentle movement is just as important. Dr. Hinojosa encourages patients to begin light walking as early as the day after surgery. Walking a few times a day (with a slight bend at the knees and hips) can promote healthy circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots. With this in mind, strenuous activity, exercise, and lifting should be avoided until cleared by Dr. Hinojosa.
6. Manage Garments Properly
If you are prescribed a compression garment, wear it exactly as instructed. This specialized garment can support your healing tissues, minimize swelling, and prevent fluid buildup. Proper use of your garment can significantly influence the final outcome, so be consistent and follow the recommended wear schedule.
7. Monitor Your Drains (If Applicable)
Many tummy tuck procedures involve temporary drains to remove excess fluid. If you receive drains, be sure to:
- Empty the bulbs regularly (usually morning and evening)
- Record the amount of fluid on your drainage sheet
- Clean the area gently as instructed
Maintaining a consistent and accurate log of fluid output enables Dr. Hinojosa to determine the appropriate time for drain removal (typically within the first one to two weeks following surgery).
8. Avoid Smoking and Nicotine Products
If you smoke or use nicotine products, it is essential to stop at least four weeks before and after your tummy tuck. Nicotine restricts blood flow, impairs wound healing, and increases the risk of complications like infection or poor scarring.
9. Plan to Support Scar Healing
Once your incisions have fully closed and Dr. Hinojosa has confirmed that it is safe to begin, you may start incorporating scar management treatments to minimize the visibility of surgical scars. These may include steroid injections, silicone-based products, or laser and skin resurfacing procedures introduced later in the healing process. Dr. Hinojosa will provide personalized guidance on when to begin scar therapy and which methods may be appropriate for your skin type and recovery progress.
10. Follow Your Surgeon’s Instructions
Above all, closely follow your post-operative instructions. This includes:
- Taking medications as prescribed
- Attending all scheduled follow-up appointments
- Avoiding certain movements or activities
- Reporting any unusual symptoms right away
Every body heals at its own pace, but following Dr. Hinojosa’s instructions gives you the best possible opportunity to support a smooth recovery, minimize risks, and achieve optimal results from your abdominoplasty procedure.
