What Is a Tummy Tuck?
As a result of age, pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and other factors, the skin and tissues of the abdomen can lose their elasticity, oftentimes becoming loose and saggy. In some cases, the muscles of the abdomen can also begin to separate, creating a distended or “pooched” appearance. All of these factors can contribute to self-consciousness or embarrassment. Worse yet, these concerns can be very difficult—if not outright impossible—to get rid of with diet and exercise alone. A tummy tuck is designed to comprehensively rejuvenate the abdomen by removing excess skin, tightening the underlying musculature, and reshaping the remaining tissue for a firmer, flatter aesthetic.
Abdominoplasty can be performed using a variety of techniques depending upon the nature of your concerns. For instance, Dr. Hinojosa can tailor the procedure to address the lower belly by employing a “mini tummy tuck,” which specifically targets the region between the belly button and the upper pubic area.
What Are the Benefits of a Tummy Tuck?
One of the most sought-after aesthetic surgeries in the world, a tummy tuck’s potential benefits include:
- A firmer, more toned midsection
- Tightening of loose musculature and/or diastasis recti repair
- Significant reduction of unwanted skin, tissue, and fat
- A more slender waistline
- Long-lasting results (provided the patient maintains a healthy lifestyle following surgery)
- Enhanced self-confidence
Who Is a Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?
A good candidate for a tummy tuck is someone in generally good health who has excess skin, loose abdominal muscles, or stubborn fat in the midsection that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise. It’s often sought by individuals after significant weight loss or pregnancy. Ideal candidates are at a stable weight, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the results. This procedure is not intended for weight loss, so it’s best for those who are close to their target weight and looking to achieve a firmer, more contoured abdomen.
Tummy Tuck Surgery vs. Liposuction
Although tummy tuck surgery and liposuction are often confused, these two procedures are actually quite different in the benefits they can provide. Specifically, a tummy tuck is designed to tighten weakened or separated abdominal muscles, remove loose or sagging skin, and reshape the midsection for a flatter, firmer contour. On the other hand, liposuction is often ideal for patients frustrated by excess fat but who possess otherwise good skin quality. Because liposuction does not correct muscle laxity or remove loose skin, it’s typically best suited for individuals whose primary concern is isolated fat rather than overall abdominal laxity.
In some cases, combining both procedures can produce the most comprehensive rejuvenation—flattening the abdomen, tightening the core, and enhancing overall body contours. Dr. Hinojosa will evaluate your goals and anatomy to determine which approach may best suit your needs.
Complementary Procedures to Tummy Tuck Surgery
While abdominoplasty can be performed on its own, Dr. Hinojosa’s patients frequently opt to include the procedure as part of a comprehensive mommy makeover. This customizable, multi-step option involves a combination of treatments to transform a patient’s appearance. Other common additions to a mommy makeover include liposuction (as stated above), breast augmentation, mastopexy, or a breast lift with implants. Whatever your goals may be, Dr. Hinojosa will personalize your treatment plan to help you achieve the physique you desire.
How Is the Tummy Tuck Procedure Performed?
Abdominoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia, and the surgery takes approximately three to four hours to complete. As stated above, Dr. Hinojosa will tailor the procedure to your specific areas of concern; that said a full, or traditional, abdominoplasty typically involves incisions around the belly button and/or across the lower abdomen along the bikini line. After the incisions have been placed, Dr. Hinojosa will tighten the muscles and remove and redrape excess skin and tissue as needed before meticulously closing the incisions. In some cases, liposuction may also be included to remove excess fat and resculpt the midsection.

What Is Tummy Tuck Recovery Like?
As everyone heals according to their own timeline, the recovery process for abdominoplasty can vary in length. That said, Dr. Hinojosa generally recommends patients take at least a week off from work to rest. You may experience swelling, bruising, or soreness, but these symptoms should fade in the weeks following surgery. You will likely be prescribed pain medication to help manage any post-surgical discomfort. It is important that you carefully follow all of Dr. Hinojosa’s aftercare instructions and attend your follow-up appointments as directed. This can help expedite the healing process and optimize your final results.
Will I Have Visible Tummy Tuck Scars?
As with any major cosmetic surgery, abdominoplasty can cause scarring. That said, Dr. Hinojosa carefully places all incisions in the most inconspicuous locations possible to reduce the risk of noticeable scars. Immediately after surgery, the incisions may appear somewhat raised and discolored. However, as your body heals, they should flatten and fade significantly.
Rest assured that Dr. Hinojosa will discuss the plan for incision placement during your consultation so you know what to expect. We also offer a variety of skin treatments that may be used to reduce the appearance of scarring.
Are There Any Alternatives to a Tummy Tuck?
Depending on a patient’s goals, there may be less invasive alternatives for addressing abdominal aesthetics than a tummy tuck. For example, a mini tummy tuck can be considered for patients with concerns primarily below the belly button. For those with mild skin laxity or minimal amounts of unwanted fat, non-surgical treatments may help improve abdominal contours.
While these alternatives can offer benefits, they cannot provide the same dramatic results as a full tummy tuck. A consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Hinojosa can help determine the best approach for achieving your desired results.
