Can Blepharoplasty Improve Tired Eyes?

- Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) removes excess skin and tissue around the eyes to correct drooping upper lids, under-eye puffiness, and a chronically “tired” look.
- Dr. Cassidy Hinojosa offers upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, or a combination of both, tailored to your specific areas of concern.
- The procedure can be paired with a brow lift for more comprehensive rejuvenation, and most patients return to normal activities within one to two weeks.
As we age, the collagen in our skin tends to dissipate, causing a myriad of cosmetic concerns in the face. In particular, our patients frequently express frustration over signs of aging in the eye area, which are often immediately visible and difficult to conceal. What’s more, concerns like creases, dark circles, and wrinkles around the eyes can cause a tired, dazed, or even gloomy look to befall the face.
Thankfully, blepharoplasty – also known as “eyelid surgery” – can be an effective solution for such concerns. Our board-certified plastic surgeon in Corpus Christi, Cassidy Hinojosa, MD, has performed countless eyelid surgeries throughout her career, and her well-honed skill and attention to detail have helped her produce consistently exceptional results.
What Causes the Eyes to Look Tired?
The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate than skin found elsewhere on the face, which makes it especially susceptible to the effects of aging. Over time, the muscles supporting the eyelids weaken, fat that once cushioned the eye can shift or protrude, and skin loses the elasticity needed to keep it taut. The result is often a combination of drooping upper lids, under-eye bags, hollowing, and fine wrinkling, all of which can make a person look far more fatigued or older than they feel.
In some cases, these changes are purely cosmetic; in others, particularly with significant upper eyelid drooping, they can even interfere with peripheral vision. Understanding what’s driving your particular concerns is an important first step in determining which blepharoplasty approach will be most effective for you.
Is Blepharoplasty Right for You?
Ideal candidates for eyelid surgery are bothered by visible signs of aging around the eyes, such as sagging upper lids, under-eye puffiness, or crepey skin, and want a more refreshed, alert appearance. Candidates should be in good general health, be non-smokers or willing to abstain from smoking during the healing process, and have realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve.
Since blepharoplasty addresses skin and fat, not deeper structural changes like a drooping brow, some patients may benefit more from a combination approach, which Dr. Hinojosa can discuss during a one-on-one consultation.
The ultimate goal of blepharoplasty is to reduce signs of aging in the eye area and rejuvenate the appearance of the upper third of the face. The incisions are meticulously placed to reposition and remove excess skin and tissue in the treatment area. Eyelid surgery can be performed using a few different techniques, and we can conduct either of the most popular two at our practice:
- Upper blepharoplasty: Typical candidates for upper eyelid surgery may experience drooping or sagging in the upper eyelids, which can contribute to an unwanted “worn out” expression. During an upper blepharoplasty procedure, incisions are made in the upper crease of the eyelid, a location that usually leaves little to no visible scarring. From there, Dr. Hinojosa can excise redundant skin, reduce the effects of fat protrusion, and tighten the weakened muscles as needed.
- Lower blepharoplasty: Patients with wrinkles, crepey skin, or dark circles directly below the eyes can benefit from lower blepharoplasty. Incisions are made inside the eyelid or under the lash line. Like the incisions made in an upper blepharoplasty, these marks can be placed inconspicuously and seldom leave noticeable scars. The puffy or hollow skin under the eyes can be sculpted, tightened, or otherwise contoured depending on your aesthetic goals. Dr. Hinojosa can also employ a technique called “fat transposition,” which involves redistributing fat into facial areas that lack volume.
Elements of both methods can also be combined to specifically target your areas of concern. For those with a severe “tired” look to their expression due to a sagging forehead, Dr. Hinojosa can combine blepharoplasty with a brow lift for comprehensive rejuvenation.
Will Blepharoplasty Results Look Natural?
One of the most common concerns patients have about eyelid surgery is whether the results will look “done” rather than simply refreshed. Dr. Hinojosa’s approach favors subtle, proportionate changes that restore a more youthful, alert appearance without altering the natural shape of the eyes. Because incisions are placed within the eyelid crease or along the lash line, resulting scars are typically well concealed once healing is complete.
Results are generally long-lasting, particularly for upper eyelid surgery, though the natural aging process will continue and some patients choose to pursue additional treatments, such as injectables or a brow lift, later on to maintain their results.
